Piri-Piri is the Swahili word for the African Bird’s-eye chili – primarily those of Angola and Mozambique, former Portuguese colonies. Often used as a marinade, basting liquid, sauce and even as a condiment. It isn’t uncommon in Lisbon to find bottles of Piri-Piri sauce on restaurant table tops. Come down and try our famous Piri-Piri sauce for yourself.
Portuguese cuisine is characterised by rich and full-flavored dishes with a Mediterranean influence. Portugal’s former colonial rule is worthy of note where cooking and food preperation goes, especially in the wide variety of spices used in Portuguese cuisine. These spices include Piri-Piri (small, fiery chili peppers) and black pepper, as well as cinnamon, vanilla and saffron. Olive oil is commonly used in Portuguese cuisine both for cooking and flavouring meals.
